STATEMENT

I have been a professional painter, printmaker, fiber artist and sculptor for fifty years. My work is characterized by the use of found objects, assemblage, social commentary and the life/death passage common to all. My early training was in the field of painting. By the 1970’s I was a full time printmaker making highly embossed collagraphs. The plates were so interesting, I framed them and exhibited them as bas-relief sculpture.

In the 1980’s I continued my esthetic exploration with dimensional quilts, fiber and mixed media sculpture. A trip to Egypt resulted in my Mummy Series, Boat Series and Hoisted Figures Series as metaphors for the passage from life to death.

I have always loved the ubiquitous Los Angeles palm tree. During my daily walks I picked up and dragged back to my studio the long frond and armor-like part that attaches to the trunk. These wonderful shapes and textures “triggered” my present work. I have created a Forest of Columns covered with natural plant and tree forms, an installation in memory of the great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak. The columns suggest Temples, sentinels, memorials, male/female embrace, sensual entwinings and evoke a mysterious other world presence.

Included are slides of my work completed in the 1990’s showing vertical, elongated sculpture in the round, and most recently, my Windfall Series of spiraling, whirling, windblown, painted palm fronds presented as wall-hung bas-reliefs.
