Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present Poppornostarculture, a solo exhibition by artist Scott Katano. Katano’s art presents a fresh and challenging perspective on the language of popular culture: its words, colors, forms, textures and values.

The artwork in this exhibition is based on the artist’s portmanteaus, which are words in which the sound and meaning of two words are combined to make a new word, i.e. smog (fog + smoke) or jazzersize. Where portmanteaus are often used to make concepts more memorable and easier to understand, Katano’s portmanteaus, which are created from words typically found in popular culture, prompt complex associations and new meanings. Pillow-like constructions fashioned from vinyl, chrome and polished stainless steel hold the provocative word combinations.

“The colors, materials, concepts I employed in this body of work,” he states, “are all borrowed from contemporary popular culture. The colors and color combinations were taken from Big beat CD covers, Japanese manga and anime, and fifties style furniture. Vinyl, chrome and polished stainless steel also reference fifties style furniture as well as California car culture and PVC and latex fashion...The format of the pieces, interlocking rings, are meant to resemble candy, pills, molecules and memes (small units of information). By picking and choosing and randomly combining these “hot” issues with materials and colors that are also timely I hope to create pieces that are somewhat nonsensical but also thought provoking.”
