Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present "Seeing Light," an exhibition of artwork by Robilee Frederick. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, October 21, 5 - 7 p.m.

Robilee Frederick considers the mysteries of existence, loss and memory in "Seeing Light," an exhibition of the artist’s new paintings and three dimensional, mixed media light box constructions.

Frederick’s latest body of work uses light as both metaphor and tool. Glowing orbs emanate from shadowy, atmospheric fields of rich red, pale green and/or charcoal colored paint in the meditative, ethereal Lumina paintings. In other pieces, the artist uses flames from candles, gun powder, cigarettes or incense to burn her lush surfaces of paint or Japanese tea paper. The circular and flame or vessel-like shapes that occupy the paintings recall forms of ritualized remembrance and celestial bodies .

In another series, Frederick paints on sheets of drafting tissue and gut which she mounts over light boxes and individual fluorescent tubes of light. The light becomes an element of the work itself and brings the pieces to life by illuminating the abstract, painted forms. These radiant constructions have a likeness to illuminated manuscripts.

The translucency of the medium Frederick says, “reflects the evanescent quality of memory...these are pieces that are like membranes that are lucent when light passes through them. The presence of light running through them creates luminosity that resonates with the fugitive quality of our memories. In the marks of my work I see light, burn, flame, breath, all acts for life’s transience.”
