Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present Ten Paintings, an exhibition of artwork by Marc Trujillo. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, April 15, 4 - 6 p.m.

Ten Paintings brings together a series of works drawn from Marc Trujillo’s observations of his urban surroundings. While viewers, no doubt, recognize the familiar setting of a movie theater, supermarket or airport terminal, Trujillo transforms these places into spaces worth pausing to look at instead of merely passing through. Deft brushwork and carefully conceived compositions infuse moments, places and the people that occupy them with consideration not normally given.

“It is important to me,” Trujillo says, “that the subjects be drawn from the middle ground of common experience...The titles of the paintings are the addresses of the places they show. This allows the titles to be both specific and completely open-ended about the subjects at the same time.”

Trujillo sheds narrative and sentimentality from the places he depicts in favor of careful, intimate observations. 497 Harmon Meadow Blvd., for example, shows the entryway of a movie theater with a partial view of the seats inside. The majority of the composition is dominated by the walls, doors and other details just outside the theater which are awash in a crisp light made by soft gradations of carefully chosen colors.

Marc Trujillo’s concise compositions along with his acute awareness of the nature of public spaces gracefully transform and heighten the viewer’s experience of common places.
