Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present paintings by artist Michael Brangoccio in exhibition titled Jail Birds Series. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, December 4, 4 -6 p.m.
In his new body of work Michael Brangcoccio uses birds set in surrealistic spaces as a vehicle to explore larger issues of human existence. Within each painting, the artist places sculptural birds into dream-like settings dotted with allegorical objects: in one painting a maple tree grows out of a jack-in-the-box being pulled along by elephants; in another, a bird sits on the branch of a tree that is barren save for a small white flower which the bird stares at. The background is a beautifully rendered tapestry of paisley.
Michael uses these provocative images to address fundamental questions of existence. However, he presents his musings with subtlety and with a tinge of humor which allows the viewer to apply his or her own conclusions to the open-ended narratives set before them.
The Jail Birds paintings are technically engaging as well. The artist applies layer upon layer of paint, lets it dry to a certain point and then rolls and wrings the canvas to chip off and crack some of the initial layers of paint. He then reapplies paint to cover the exposed canvas and finally varnishes the entire surface to ensure that the dried paint adheres to the canvas. A tactile, textured surface results which beautifully lends itself to the spaces that Brangoccio creates.
