Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present "Elegy," a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Daniel Brice. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, October 30, 5 -7 p.m.
Daniel Brices paintings explore the possibilities of landscape within abstraction. In certain paintings, floral and geometric elements hover above a warm painterly field. Within the same painting, areas of translucent paint layers create a host of vast spaces. In other paintings such as "The Turnaround," nebulous forms and delicate daubs of yellow light emanate from behind a veil of blue. An almost temporal space results as the horizon line recedes and advances. Whether dense or sparse each of Brices compositions reveals a sense of landscape within an abstract field of lush colors.
Brice explains of his "Elegy" series that, the landscape floats in a state of becoming. A horizon line may break or shift within the field of the image; flora may be present but abstracted, and color vacillates between the natural and the manufactured. The paintings suggest the sublime possibilities of a life as yet unrealized...of dream rhythms or bits and pieces the flotsam of consciousness.
Brices paintings engage their viewers with his distinctive sense of color and compositional harmonies that challenge the boundaries of landscape and abstract painting.
