Ruth Bachofner Gallery is pleased to present "Dreaming of Rectangles", Barbara Kerwins third solo exhibition at this gallery. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, December 2, 4-7 p.m.
"Dreaming of Rectangles" features Barbara Kerwins new series of encaustic constructions. Kerwins current body of work reflects her interest in organic architecture. Using color that has personal resonances, the artist manufactures crayon-like encaustic pigments in her studio. She brushes layer upon layer of the liquid medium onto leach paper rectangles and joins the individual components together into structures that blur the boundary between sculpture and painting.
Subtleties abound in Kerwins lush surfaces that emerge from the reflective state in which they were produced. The colors are personal, the artist says, applied to elicit a meditative response to a life event. . . .Dreaming of Rectangles, she continues refers to the subconscious associations we cant always identify. The subconscious of dreams, contemplations and interactions with ones muse mark a process I have consistently referred to as meditative.
While a sense of order presides in these structures, the individual forms have a soft, organic quality that diffuse the hardness of the geometric format. Elongated, irregular or overlapping forms in a range of colors create movement in and out and across the compositions. Kerwin gracefully orchestrates color, movement and structure and engages the viewer into this playful, dynamic dialogue.
