International's fifth biennial, the 2001 invitational is taking shape, and we are pleased to keep you informed on the latest exciting developments. The Absolut-L.A. International has developed a unique format in which over 65 best contemporary galleries and institutions will host international exhibitions that include over 200 artists from 30 countries throughout Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Venice. Exhibition dates are set to run from July 18 to August 18 (see below for the current schedule--the particulars are subject to change, but we will let you know!). We will be opening this year's Absolut-L.A. International at Bergamot Station with the 75th Anniversary outdoor screening of "Metropolis," accompanied by a live orchestra. And that will only be the beginning of a great summer. In addition to the lineup of international art being exhibited, panel discussion, lectures, and special events are scheduled to be held at the Getty Center, Los Angeles County Museum, the UCLA Hammer Museum, MOCA, the Santa Monica Museum, Cal State Long Beach's University Art Museum, the 18th Street Arts Complex, Barnsdall Art Park, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, and the Italian Cultural Institute, the Korean Cultural Center, and the Irvine Fine Arts Center. Here are a few of the special events that participating galleries and museums are preparing: The Santa Monica Museum will exhibit GENTLE INTERVENTIONS: LIGA PANG, and host a special preview of the artist installing her exhibition. Chinese artist Liga Pang's work is intimately related to the Japanese hinto. Working in the Ikebana tradition, Pang creates large scale sculptures out of various natural elements--clay, paper, bamboo and stones. The Italian Cultural Institute will be hosting and exhibition of the work of GRAZIA TODERI. The MAK Center for Art & Architecture will be hosting an exhibition by PAULINE OLIVEROS and PHILIP GELB, entitled "sound. at the schindler house". The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) will again be welcoming VIP guests of the ABSOLUT-L.A. INTERNATIONAL to their private Member's Opening of the DAVID HOCKNEY exhiibition, Saturday, July 21, 2001. The Moderna Museet in Stockholm is in the final stages of brining a major exhibition of contemporary Nordic work, entitled "ORGANIZING FREEDOM," to Los Angeles this summer for participation in the ABSOLUT-L.A. INTERNATIONAL. The 18th Street Arts Complex will be hosting a group of artists from Japan, Taiwan and Australia. In neighboring Orange County, the Irvine Fine Arts Center will be hosting a group exhibition from the Netherlands. The Korean Cultural Center will exhibit the work of Korean painters. Special panel discussions are in the planning stages at the Getty Center, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the UCLA Hammer Museum. Again, bear in mind that these are subject change, but we will keep you informed as to the status of these and other ABSOLUT-L.A. INTERNATIONAL events. The Web site will feature an interactive catalog and virtual exhibitions, an overview of events, and a guide to transportation throughout the Absolut-L.A. International. To document the exhibitions the old-fashioned, non-virtual way, there will be a catalog and visitors guide. The Absolut-L.A. International is a citywide nonprofit event conceived to foster a dialogue between the Los Angeles art community and artists, galleries, curators, museums, collectors and visitors from around the world. Since its inception in 1993, the Absolut-L.A. International has grown in breadth and quality of participation, sponsorship and recognition, with principal backing from Absolut Vodka, Audi, Butterfields (an E-Bay company), and the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, who have been joined this year by the most impressive roster of sponsors to date. To accommodate the influx of visitors this year, the organizers have worked out special hotel and travel arrangements. For information on these special rates, please contact the organizers. |
