CHARON EXTREME, shown here, will be exhibited at the Orlando Gallery in fall 1996, and in spring, 1997, as part of a suite of paintings and drawings titled MOVING MICHELANGELO, by Southern California figurative artist Don Lagerberg.
"CHARON" is based on the character in Michelangelo's LAST JUDGMENT in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican, Rome (look in the lower right-hand corner). Driving the damned into Hades, this Charon is depicted at the completion of the swing of his oar. The beginning/ending of a gesture is known in animation as an "extreme", hence, CHARON EXTREME ...in addition to the more emotional connotations of the title.
CHARON EXTREME measures @ 7.5' h x 11' w, and is painted in oil paint on panel. The exhibition of the painting will include preliminary studies, working drawings and in-between drawings. An electronic animation of the cycle of action is in preparation.
Don Lagerberg is a figurative artist with strong ties to traditional European figurative painting and to American popular culture. He is Professor of Art at California State University, Fullerton, where he teaches courses in figure drawing and painting, and entertainment art.
