Insights 2000, the Annual Student Exhibition held at California State University, Long Beach, will open at the University Art Museum Friday, May 5th, and will be on view through May 26th, 2000. Insights 2000 will feature works by both graduate and undergraduate students in the Art Department, juried by the art faculty members. The exhibition will highlight work by students in all disciplines, including ceramics, drawing and painting, graphic design, illustration, photography, printmaking, fiber, metal/jewelry, and new genre.
The exhibition will demonstrate the extraordinary level of artistic achievement at the University. As part of Californias largest publicly funded school for the arts, CSULBs College of the Arts seeks to train artists with vision to become what they want to be-- not what anyone else has already been. Long a flagship institution, the Art Department boasts one of the nations most comprehensive arts programs. The diversity of studio art curriculum offered reflects the departments commitment to encourage students to pursue a variety of goals, not limited by material or technique. As described by Art Department Chair Jay Kvapil, Insights 2000 will express who the department is, as seen through the eyes of its students.
The UAM invites families to make this exciting annual exhibition a part of their graduation festivities, and in order to accommodate guests, will offer extended hours on May 26th.
There will be a reception for the artists exhibiting in Insights 2000 on Thursday, May 4th from 5-7 pm in the UAM galleries. All students, faculty, staff, and the general public are invited. Light refreshments will be served.
On Tuesday, May 9th at 12:15 pm, there will be a UAM@noon gallery talk on Insights 2000. CSULB Art Department students featured in the exhibition will discuss their work and their experiences in the program.
This May, the UAM will host two evenings of poetry in partnership with the CSULB English Department. On Thursday, May 11th from 7-9 pm, a group of ten graduate students will deliver original works in the annual MFA poetry reading. Coordinator Jeff Epley promises that the works presented will be humorous, insightful, and easily accessible. On Thursday, May 18th, from 7-9 pm, the English department will present student and faculty compositions from their annual journal, riprap. This event will also celebrate the premier issue release of the new campus literary magazine.
All events are free and open to the public.
Insights 2000 is sponsored in part by the Department of Art, CSULB. The UAM, a division of the College of the Arts, is also supported by the CSULB Foundation and the Instructionally Related Activities Fund. Education programming is provided in part by the CSULB Alumni Association, California Arts Council, and the Forty-Niner Shops.
