James Drake received his BFA and MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, before returning to his native Texas, where he now resides in El Paso. His work has not been seen in the Los Angeles area since 1992, however, during his extensive artistic career, it has been exhibited in numerous one-person shows in galleries and museums throughout the U.S., including The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; The Alternative Museum, New York; La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; and Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco. He received the SECA Art Award in 1989 and he is a three-time recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Drake’s work was recently selected to be included in the 2000 Whitney Biennial exhibition.
