ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My work has always alternated between social commentary and a love of nature. In the early eighties I began to focus on plant life. I did a series on Bromeliads and later a series on Cactus and Waterlilies. In both, I traveled to gardens all over in search of material. I found that the play of shadows combined with close-up sections of the plants created bold and compelling images that were at once realistic, yet abstract. They became a world of
their own.
This past summer I had a fellowship that enabled me to paint for a month at The Julia and David White Artists' Colony in Costa Rica. This was my 3rd trip to that country but the first at the colony. It took a while to get in touch with my feelings amidst this lush tropical paradise. After much walking and meditating, I was finally able to start painting. The energies, structure and forms of the plants enabled me to conjure up all kinds of feelilngs and moods. At times I became intrigued with the patterns and shapes, where subliminal images seemed to appear as humanistic or animal forms, as in Jungle Medley, Floral Sweep and Cactus and Waterlilies(the latter two painted at an earlier date). At other times, one flower became meaningful.
The works on paper were done on location, using stabilos, some combining collage and or watercolor. The canvases were later painted in acrylic. Each plant had a unique personality of its own, and it was this qualilty that I endeavored to put into my work.
