O’Brien recalls his early interest in art when he lived in Naples, Italy, where he finished high school. He took an adventure across town to a gallery, actually a home where he heard a mysterious voice repeating over and over again the same phrase. He was about to encounter his first installation work, by the artist Dennis Oppenheim. Later he attended the quadrennial Documenta in Kassel, Germany. While reposing in a gallery there, he saw a gaunt fellow wearing a fisherman’s vest and cloth hat enter through a window. He gently absconded with the young man; Joseph Beuys took him to a session of his Freetime University.

Twenty-five years of publication means that we have a history to draw on, and relationships with you, our readers to maintain. But it also means that we must continue to look beyond the horizon, to find new ways to allow this vehicle to illuminate the public options for visual art.
