Mario Cutajar leads off ArtScene’s 25th season theme of “the art epiphany.” He recalls his first encounter with the work of Cy Twombly, an encounter that literally plunged him into a turmoil. This had as much to do with what Twombly's notational drawings disclosed about an attitude toward the world as it did with what they proposed about the pictorial possibilities of the "writerly" gesture. More recently Cutajar has also come to see in this a signifier of his own oddness, and a refusal of the lure of identification. This has gradually changed him as a critic. Far from wanting to have the last word, Cutajar is relieved by the thought that he never will.

Twenty-five years of publication means that we have a history to draw on, and relationships with you, our readers to maintain. But it also means that we must continue to look beyond the horizon, to find new ways to allow this vehicle to illuminate the public options for visual art.
