Judith Hoffberg goes back a half century with the original Getty ranch in Malibu, where she conducted post-graduate research, befriended then chief curator Ann Jones, and enjoyed the collection and the rustic grounds. Hoffberg reflects on the changes brought about starting with Getty's initiative to recreate the Roman Villa dei Papiri over 30 years ago. With the recent reopening of the Getty Villa after a nine year period of renovation, she concludes that, the recent troubles at the Getty notwithstanding, they got this one right.
