(Both fairs held at Butterfield & Butterfield, West Hollywood; Photo L.A. directed by Stephen Cohen Gallery; Art on Paper directed by Marilyn Pink Fine Arts) These two separate but highly complementary small fairs have cemented January as a key month to do some quality comparison art shopping. Only thirty to forty dealers are allowed into each, and organizers Marilyn Pink (Art on Paper) and Stephen Cohen (Los Angeles Photographic Print Exposition--or, Photo L.A.) have done yeomen work to develop a select cross-section of reputable dealers from across the U.S. (with two European participants in there as well). Visitors can be confident in advance that quality and variety will be very good to excellent, while hype is on the low-key side.

Host Butterfield & Butterfield's auctionhouse galleries (in West Hollywood at 7601 Sunset Boulevard) provide a comfortable setting that is neither too cavernous nor too cramped. The admission charge is about the same as for a visit to L.A. County Museum (Photo L.A. runs $10 per day or $15 for all three days; Art on Paper is $7 per day, $10 for both days), which includes the usual show catalogue that serves to document and promote the participanting dealers.

Both fairs open with evening Preview Benefits. On January 15th from 6-9pm Photo L.A., with official host filmmaker and artist David Lynch, will provide support for DIFFA/Photographers + Friends United Against AIDS. Admission is $35 per person; call (310) 652-6601 for information or reservations. Then come January 30th from 5-9pm Art on Paper's $30 per person soirée will turn over its profits to Cedars/Sinai Medical Center's De-partment of Psychiatry and Mental Health.
