On Sunday, February 8th, a solo exhibition by JILL DAVES will open at HAUS with a preview reception for the artist from 4 to 7 p.m.
Jill Daves’ wall drawings focus on the history of a given wall in an exhibition space. In her “Divots and Bumps” series, she uses marks left on the gallery walls from previous exhibits as a springboard for her drawings. Carefully circling - over and over again - marks left by uneven sanding on nail or screw holes, she refocuses the gaze on what usually serves as just a neglected backdrop. In this laborious and meditative process a layered and ephemeral representation of the walls’ own history emerges slowly over the several weeks of the installation. But the process is never really completed, just interrupted by the gallery’s opening, only to be erased and painted over after the exhibition closes. Ultimately, Jill Daves’ art is a tribute to all things fleeting and ignored.
Jill Daves now lives and works in Los Angeles. She received her MFA the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana after obtaining her BFA from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, TN. She has been in group exhibitions in Pennsylvania, Alabama, Illinois, Idaho, Tennessee, Kentucky, Minnesota and California. This will be Daves’ fifth solo exhibition.
