Todd Walker, Pearl, 1960’s.

The Stephen Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by renowned photographer Todd Walker, known for his creative and experimental use of traditional photographic processes. It was Walkerʼs groundbreaking work with the computer, later in his career that brought about his dynamic digital imagery. The exhibition has been co-curated by Los Angeles-based photographer Anthony Friedkin, and Melanie Walker, the photographerʼs daughter and the executor of his Estate.

Walker was born in Salt Lake City in 1917, and raised in Los Angeles. He established himself as a successful commercial photographer in Southern California in the late 1940s, a career he eventually gave up in order to pursue his artistic interests. Beginning with solarization and alternative processes in the 1960s, Walker developed a unique and personal visual language, which runs through the last three decades of his work. In 1981 he began using digital processing to extend his photographic technique, and became proficient at computer programming to create the tools he required.

Walkerʼs photographs can be found in a number of important collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona. His work was part of the Contemporary Photographs exhibition curated by Robert Heinecken at UCLA in 1968. Walker taught for many years, at Art Center in Pasadena, as well as UCLA, the University of Florida, Gainesville, and the University of Arizona at Tucson.

This will be the first exhibition of Todd Walkerʼs work at the gallery. A reception will be held on Saturday, January 3 from 7 – 9 p.m.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 – 6 p.m. and by appointment. For additional information on the exhibition, please contact Mario DeFlice at 323.937.5525, or by email at
