David Halliday, “Grapefruit and Eucalyptus”, 2007, pigment ink print, 14” x 18”.
The Stephen Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce its exhibitions for spring Natura Viva in the main gallery, and David Halliday’s new, color still-life photographs in the viewing room. This will be Halliday’s first exhibition with the gallery. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 24 from 7 9 p.m., with Halliday, and other gallery artists in attendance.
Natura Viva, a group exhibition highlighting the pleasures of spring, will also showcase a range of photographic processes from traditional to contemporary, both color and black & white. The season of new growth is revealed through images of animals in nature, blossoming trees, plant specimens, traditional landscapes, and scenes of urban outings. The photographs range in date from 1900 2000, and include a variety of media, from platinum, cyanotype and photogravure to silver, chromogenic and pigment ink.
David Halliday’s well-known sepia-toned still-lifes have garnered much attention in the past. His latest body of color work maintains the same intimate and simple beauty, while at the same time creating a more visceral connection for the viewer. The rich colors and sensual textures seem embodied by the scent and nature of the items he selects. Shot during 2007 in various locations from his home in New Orleans to Nantucket, as well as Italy and Greece, his attention to detail and composition, combined with meticulous printing remind us of the basic pleasures in perceived happenstance.
Halliday has been photographing for nearly two decades, and has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. and in Europe. A limited edition monograph of the artist’s sepia-toned still-lifes, The Perfect world of David Halliday, was published by 21st Publications in 2003. His images have been included in various compilation books, showcasing his other bodies of work.
Natura Viva and Still-Life will be on exhibit at the Stephen Cohen Gallery located at 7358 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and by appointment.
