John Coulter, "Merged Totems," 2007, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, oil, pencil on watercolor paper, 24" x 30".
John Coulter debuts his long-awaited collection of drawings and paintings THE NEW MYTHOLOGY, a powerful and passionate addition to the school of Modern Primitivism.
Working in montages of mixed media including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencil, charcoal, acrylic-transfer and three-dimensional construction, John creates a visual mythos, embracing both modern and aboriginal influences that inspire the viewer to reexamine preconceived notions of society, culture, language and religion.
The series was inspired by John’s visits to the Musée Picasso, the Louvre, and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, where John became fascinated by Picasso’s work.
Coulter’s drawing “Bull Figures” is in the collection of Richard Weisman, the noted author of PICASSO TO POP: THE RICHARD WEISMAN COLLECTION.
John Coulter trained at Chicago’s Art Institute, The University of Illinois, and UCLA. For more than two decades, he has been one of Hollywood’s best-known graphic designers, creating CD packaging, logos, advertising campaigns, and tourbooks for such artists as Madonna, Shakira, Josh Groban, Barbra Streisand, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Enrique Eglasias, Elton John, Steve Winwood, Wynonna Judd, Sheena Easton, Paula Abdul and Mariah Carey.
John Coulter is available for interviews arranged in advance.
