For Suki Berg, art is a mystery to be solved. From her student days, she emerged in the 1950s as a talented young artist, taking classes in New York City with Hans Hoffman, and finding her own path in the new form of Abstract Expressionism.

The hallmark of that era, the "gestural mark," remains an important aspect of her work to this day. In her earliest work family relationships are represented not in a sentimental way, but in terms of distance and estrangement. She continues to develop the theme of relationships metaphorically, within layers of mythology, in the late 1950's and early 60's. The landscape comes into play in the middle period of Berg's art, when it provides an escape from family crisis. In the 1990's her work returns to myth, metaphor, and family, this time in penetrating portraits of herself.

Turning 91 years old this April, Suki awakens each day still eager to work in her studio.

Orange County Center for Contemporary Art is pleased to honor our long time member, Suki Berg, with this retrospective. This show is a tribute to seven decades of art, and to this exceptional and dedicated woman who inspires us.
