Mitchell Johnson, “North Truro”, 2008, oil on linen, 26” x 20”.
New landscape and color-field paintings by Mitchell Johnson will be on display at Terrence Rogers Fine Art in Santa Monica, from Sunday, March 2 thru Saturday, April 5, 2008. The artist will give a talk about his paintings beginning at 2 o’clock on Sunday, March 2, followed by a reception.
Mitchell Johnson’s large-scale canvases deliver the immediacy and impact of plein-air painting, combined with the serious understanding of abstract form and color wherein a landscape becomes a still life. The perception of color and form continue to intrigue him, and the paintings represent a significant breakthrough in the themes Johnson has been pursuing for many years.
His use of color and composition convey the pure enjoyment of being surrounded by natural beauty -- whether contemplating seaside villages at the Cape, or commanding a view of the Italian countryside. They are objects of distilled colors and silent perspective.
This series of paintings is the synthesis of Johnson’s fascination with the paintings of Josef Albers and Giorgio Morandi. Johnson had been painting in Italy and came across an Albers exhibition at his favorite museum - The Museo Morandi in Bologna. Curiously, in 2007, Johnson enjoyed an artist residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut. These paintings were created shortly thereafter. The influence is clear; the result is quite refreshing.
Mitchell Johnson has exhibited his work at the gallery since 1993, and has had solo exhibitions in New York City, San Francisco and Santa Fe; and at a number of galleries in Italy.
A 20-page color catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
Gallery hours: Wednesday thru Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
