Michael Perelman, “Elaine’s Wedding Gown”, 2004, oil on canvas, 96 x 132 inches.

Western Project is proud to present the first solo exhibition in Los Angeles by Michael Perelman. Titled Inseparable, the work addresses middle class family life and the idyllic dream of suburbia. His pictures are about the world of adults – an enormous wedding dress, men’s trousers dropped on the floor, bedside tables with matching lamps – autobiographical information experienced by many. Yet it is a child’s point of view - the pictures are icons of memory, of parents and marriage, and the emotional tones of home. Perelman’s strict palette of browns and grays depict a material world of fabric and furniture polish, empty desks and a coroner’s office – a chronicle of drama and absence. Perelman’s generic symbols are loaded with grace and innuendo; of softness and stories; and of love and tragic death. They evidence suburban lives once in Eden, and ending elsewhere.
Perelman has shown in New York at the Steffany Martz Gallery and White Columns. His exhibition at Western Project will be accompanied by a full color catalogue.
