Charles Arnoldi, “Ephemera”, 2005, Acrylic on Canvas, 78 1/8 x  78 1/8 inches.

Charles Arnoldi’s (b. 1946) 2005 large-scale acrylic on canvas paintings will be on exhibition at Bobbie Greenfield Gallery October 8 – November 26, 2005.  These works continue his method of joining several canvas panels together to compose a piece that is both painting and construction.  These are the newest generation of Arnoldi’s large-scale modular paintings, which he began in 1999, and share the strong geometry, bold color palette, and texture of the earlier works.  Each generation has seen an evolution in the composition of interchangeable negative and positive shapes within each panel from leaf-like forms, to globes, to arches.  The 2005 paintings are now simplified to rectangular color fields that echo the panels themselves.  With this recent body of work the artist has emphasized the construction of the paintings by selectively choosing to leave some panels out, thus creating windows within the work and at times giving the perimeter of the canvas an irregular shape.

This current body of work exemplifies Charles Arnoldi’s persistent drive to continually evolve his work so that each series grows out of the previous yet has an integrity of its own.  Arnoldi has been a quintessential Los Angeles artist since the 1960’s. His work is included in numerous museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC
