Women Painters West presents its last show of the year, “Color & Line,” A Juried Exhibition, opening Wednesday, October 27th through November 20th at the new VIVA Gallery in Sherman Oaks. Awards will be presented at the Reception on Saturday, October 30th. Ernest Velardi, Professor Emeritus at California State University of Northridge, is the Juror of Selection and Awards for this show.
WPW, one of the leading Southern California art associations, is a non-profit organization that seeks to bring together talented professional artists in the spirit of friendship, artistic expression, education and philanthropy. With a legacy spanning more than 80 years, their goals are as important now as they were when they held their first exhibition in Laguna Beach in 1921 under the name of “The Women’s Art Club of Southern California.” Independent top-notch jurors from outside the organization, such as prominent artists, curators, critics and gallery directors, have given their exhibitions an outstanding reputation of quality and diversity. A recent juror, Scott Canty, stated - “WPW has a strong standing in the art scene here in LA, and a long tradition of quality and established artists.” Other juror notables include Renee Amitai, Molly Barnes, Joni Gordon, Don Lagerberg, Louise Lewis, Barbara Gilbert, Lydia Takeshita, and Franklyn Liegel. Reviewers and jurors alike have described WPW shows as…”energizing, reflective, poetic, elegant. . . .with aspects of color abstraction, minimalism, expressionism, modernism, and cubism. . . .connecting cultures across the millennia”. . . .observations which truly reflect the diversity, depth, versatility, and creativity of over 200 artists and their artwork.
WPW holds monthly luncheon meetings featuring outstanding guest speakers. This year’s roster alone has included such notables as Lita Albuquerque, Eleanor Antin, Lisa Adams and Kent Twitchell, one of America’s foremost muralists. As a result of Kent’s presentation to the organization, he was invited to visit the new VIVA Gallery in Sherman Oaks. He fell in love with the space, agreed to do a retrospective of his work there and found a new home for his beloved Freeway Lady - on VIVA’s 90 foot blank outside wall.
