Los Angeles, CA. - L2Kontemporary (Chinatown) announces Edward Lightner’s summer installation, “the sum total of my artistic experiences”, from August 7 through September 4, 2004, Reception: Saturday, August 7, 6-9 PM. A collection of gallery/museum invitations collected over 20 years on display at the gallery.

People do not live in a vacuum, nor do artists create in one. So the question becomes, just how the artist has reached the point at which he is at, creatively (a visual place that will be on display at L2kontemporary in September)? In August Edward Lightner will install a temporary and ongoing project at L2k gallery which will take a closer look at the visual and creative paths that have brought his work to the point that it is at now.

We are all products of what we experience. Artists are no exception. Our world views are formed and informed by everything that we come in contact with as we go about our day to day lives. Even down to the very concepts that are inherent in the language we use. Rembrandt could not, and would not have created what he did if he had not been informed by all of his experiences, both in the ‘real’ world, and in the artistic world of his time. Edward likes to think of it as sort of the Scrabble game of life. Say the letter tiles stand for the different experiences we have had throughout our lives. If you have not been given very many experience tiles, you will not be able to have many new and interesting words. This installation will be an attempt for the artist to look back at a number of the creative things that have gone into the formation of the work that he is producing today. Edward is going to layout all of the markers that he has managed to collect (and hold onto) over the last twenty years, then he will attempt to connect some of the points. The artist expects that this endeavor will raise far more questions than it answers before his show in September, but the road map that will be created should be quite interesting and visually fun.

Edward was selected by Peter Frank to participate in the juried show, “In America Now”, at Don O’ Melveny Gallery, West Hollywood, which also opens on Saturday, August 7 and therefore will be at L2k reception after 7:30pm.
