Kris Chatterson, “Depth of Complexity II”, 2006, acrylic on canvas, 66 x 60 inches.
Western Project is proud to present the first solo exhibition of paintings by Kris Chatterson. An MFA graduate of the Claremont Graduate School, he is now a current resident of Los Angeles. Chatterson has spent two years on this body of paintings. He continues the lineage of 20th century abstraction, yet veers in another more eclectic direction. Favoring a large scale format, he manipulates acrylic paint as one creates thoughts some willful movements, some impulsive; all carefully balanced in an additive process. Each painting begins with a solid color ground and is built with gestural sequences, one over the other to create an evocative maelstrom of actions. Painting on the floor, Chatterson wields long paint brushes to interpret the vibrant and solid red, blue or green color grounds. What occurs are movements like wind; strange thunder heads or frozen clouds of solar flares. His images are contradictions of silence and fury; not of anger but the creative force recorded in paint. His works are explosive images of continuum, without a beginning or sense of ending; a signal with out specificity yet a vital and eternal impulse.
Chatterson was recently included in the (Keep Feeling) Fascination exhibition at California State University Los Angeles and has shown in San Francisco and New York.
