“The photographs of Nick Brandt are both beautiful and haunting. They come upon you in a flush of abundance that's almost hard to recover from. . . . You are about to enter a world of the imagination, where all the animals are real, both fragile and full of grace.” Alice Sebold, author of "The Lovely Bones”
Stephen Cohen Gallery announces Nick Brandt - "On This Earth: Photographs from East Africa.” Brandt’s images capture the beauty, the grace and the souls of these majestic wild animals in an elegant, romantic elegy to an enchanted Africa. To celebrate his Los Angeles gallery debut, the show will open with a reception for the artist on July 7th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Nick Brandt studied film and painting at St. Martin’s School of Art in London then built a career as an award-winning director of music videos and commercials before he embarked on his passionate quest to document one of the earth’s most beautiful and haunting of vanishing worlds. Inspired by a lifelong love of animals, the photographer insists on never using a telephoto lens in portraying them. It is his desire to reveal the essence of each animal, (the soul), that demands his approach be as close as possible without interference.
“Nick captures the hidden magic of the wild things he photographs, so stunning and spiritual as to take the breath away,” says Kuki Gallmann, author of “I Dreamed of Africa.”
Lions, cheetahs, rhinos, hippos, giraffes and chimpanzees populate large-scale images that appear both timeless and fleeting, solidly real and other-worldly, silent but eloquent, nearly human and yet distinctly, undeniably primal. Brandt is an artist and a skilled technician, using the light and the sky to tell his story, using visual effects to enhance the emotional depth of each image, sometimes using blurred and faded borders that recall the look of antique photographs. His work is emotionally resonant, leaving the viewer with a longing for this pure wilderness that is all too rapidly disappearing.
Nick Brandt has exhibited his photographs worldwide in cities including Berlin, San Francisco, Munich and New York. His work can be found in numerous private collections as well as in the corporate collection of Dow Jones, Inc. The Stephen Cohen Gallery is located at 7358 Beverly Boulevard and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment.
