OPEN CALL L.A. 2004 at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery Associates, in conjunction with the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, are pleased to announce Open Call L.A. 2004, an open call for

Southern California-based artists to show their work in a non-juried exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, 4800 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, 90027. Open Call L.A. 2004 celebrates the 50-year tradition of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery’s summertime All City Art Festival. The exhibition dates are July 14 - August 15, 2004, with an exhibition reception scheduled for July 18, 2004, 2:00 - 7:00 p.m.

In addition to this opportunity of exhibit, this year’s Open Call L.A. 2004 will award ten cash prizes of $100 to ten artists represented in the exhibition. The winners will be selected by ten prominent curators and arts professionals from Los Angeles area arts institutions, including Susana Bautista, Mexican Cultural Institute; Jay Belloli, the Armory Center for the Arts; Ashley Emenegger, Gallery 825/Los Angeles Art Association; Karin Higa, Japanese American National Museum; Eungie Joo, REDCAT; Kristina Newhouse; Joslyn Art Center; Alma Ruiz, the Museum of Contemporary Art; Timothy Wride, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; LaMonte Westmoreland, Los Angeles City College Art Gallery; and Lynn Zelevansky, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

All interested artists may submit a single original artwork for exhibition in Open Call L.A. 2004. Artworks must be brought into the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery on either July 2, 2004, 12:00 – 9:00 p.m., or July 3, 2004, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The first 1,000 qualifying artworks submitted will be accepted, and only the following categories of artwork will be accepted: painting, works on paper (including photography), mixed media/assemblage, sculpture, and video. There will also be an Open Mic opportunity for literary artists on Aug 6th (see prospectus). The entry fee per artwork is $20, with a limit of one artwork per artist. All proceeds go to the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery Associates, for support of Open Call L.A. 2004 and other continuing Municipal Art Gallery programs. Interested artists should refer to the Open Call L.A. 2004 Prospectus for detailed submission guidelines.

Open Call L.A. 2004 honors the tradition of All City Art Festival, held at the Barnsdall Art Park beginning in 1953. Over the years, the program has taken various forms, first as a juried outdoor festival, including all media and art forms, taking place over several days, and later as an outdoor festival, with selected artworks presented in the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. Today, the activities of All City Art Festival are replicated by the many cultural arts festivals held throughout the Los Angeles area each year.

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery continually strives to showcase the work of Los Angeles-based artists to both the residents and visitors of Los Angeles. This goal is fulfilled by the Gallery’s ongoing program of exhibition, including the Open Call L.A., where 1,000 artists are given the opportunity to show their work in the Gallery, the biannual Los Angeles Juried Exhibition, where artists are allowed the opportunity to compete for inclusion in a large group exhibition of selected works, and the annual C.O.L.A. Individual Artist Fellowships Program Exhibition, where the work of outstanding mid-career Los Angeles-based artists are exhibited.
