Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery celebrates twenty years as a fine art gallery with the debut of its newly renovated and expanded downtown galleries featuring an exhibition entitled, “Not Just Another Pretty Vase: A Comprehensive Exhibition of American Still Life Painting.” The exhibition features new and vintage art works by more than fifty extraordinary American artists including paintings by noted American Modernists Alfred H. Maurer, Georgia O’Keefe, Joseph Stella, Howard Warshaw and Max Weber among others. The exhibition surveys the transformation of the still life from its popularity in the nineteenth century with works by William Harnett and Paul de Longpré and continues with contemporary examples by artist represented by the gallery including R. Kenton Nelson, Hank Pitcher, Ray Turner and more.

Spanning a wide range of American art movements and philosophies, the show will incorporate internationally renowned artists as well as regional favorites. The selection of works help demonstrate that still life, as a genre of painting, defy static associations and are, in fact, a dynamic and ever-changing tableaux that American artists have use for more than one-hundred and fifty years to explore changes in styles, interests, and cultural associations. Often triumphs of domesticating nature for everyday enjoyment, great still life paintings evoke an abundance of feelings and associations that leave interpretation entirely up to the viewer.

To highlight the gallery’s twenty years of commitment to American art and this nation’s most revered artists, Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery will present special concurrent programming during the exhibition including gallery talks by Santa Fe based art-historian Catherine Whitney and local artist and art-educator, Hank Pitcher. Additionally, the gallery will be enhanced with two different still life arrangements weekly created by noted Santa Barbarans and local floral designers.
