ABBOT KINNEY ART GALLERY PRESENTS ITS FINAL EXHIBIT - ‘METAMORPHOSIS’, EVOLVED WORKS OF FOUR LOS ANGELES ARTISTS – SUSAN GESUNDHEIT, DAFNA GILBOA, SARAH WILLMAN GROTE AND RACHEL ROSS – NOW THROUGH MARCH 12TH

Los Angeles artists Susan Gesundheit, Dafna Gilboa, Sarah Willman Grote and Rachel Ross are featured at Abbot Kinney Art Gallery (Venice, CA), February 14th through March 12th, 2006.  The artists' reception will be on Saturday night, March 4th from 6 to 10 pm.  (Due to the sale of the property, this will be their final exhibit at this location).

“Metamorphosis”:  A lump of clay, paper, canvas, pigment… Los Angeles artists Susan Gesundheit, Dafna Gilboa, Sarah Willman Grote and Rachel Ross transform these inanimate materials into a moving experience of color and form through paintings and sculpture that emerge from the artists personal responses to the environment.

Susan Gesundheit’s watercolor and acrylic paintings explore the surface of a two-dimensional graphic world and break away from full subject identity and realism.  They are purely reactive to an experience of the moment or references to built and natural environments. “I don’t produce work that is polished.  Experimentation with texture and accepting unexpected changes are the tools I use as part of my creative process.”

Dafna Gilboa paints in acrylic on canvas and watercolor on paper.  She draws most of her inspirations from nature. Her expression comes from an inner vision, influenced by what she sees. She is attracted to shapes, colors and textures.  “I feel the need to constantly experiment and diversify the way in which I work.”

Sarah Willman-Grote's oil paintings capture the mystery and tranquility of intriguing natural places in the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore where the ever-changing environment provides a limitless source of discovery and inspiration.  For Willman-Grote, the most significant element is color as she explores the effect of light, especially on water and reflections on wet sand, that enable the image to stretch out before the viewer into infinity.  Her other pieces, abstract images, are painted intuitively and explore our connection to the universe.

Rachel Ross works with the natural media of stone and clay, and sometimes clay to bronze, with a choreography that achieves a finished form that beckons to be touched and caressed. Each of her works is incomplete until such time as she feels the superfluous has been omitted and the essential is obvious.  “I hope the observer will experience and re-experience nature in my personal interpretation of the finished form.”
