Jay Reed, “Synapse”, wood, 56" x 49" x 5" 2005.

You will not want to miss the art exhibition currently running at Gallery 57 Underground - a new emerging artist, Jay Reed, uses construction materials in unique ways – creating wall sculptures and assemblages that are contemporary, simple, and elegant.

Mixed media is the definite message that resonates through the entire scope of the show. One sculpture may be composed of only a few different materials; yet they are combined in ways far different than their original creation intended. One piece for example, entitled "Electric Quilt", is made from electrical conduit, electrical wires, cables, plastic tubing and lamp parts that are interwoven. The artist says he originally designed the piece to hang behind the sofa in the family room as "a weaving alternative".

The artist's background has been in the building trades as a glazier, carpenter, and superintendent and he has worked with many interior designers and architects. The artwork, which also includes original paintings, is meant to hang in the home as a contemporary complement to existing art. The scale of size of most of the pieces is 4'x4' or 3'x6' but scale can be enlarged for corporate applications.

If you are looking for something exciting and different, check out this exhibition at the Gallery 57 Underground, 300 S. Thomas Street in Old Town Pomona Art Colony. The hours are Thursday thru Sunday 12-4PM and the exhibit runs until February 27, 2005 with an artist reception February 12 from 6-9PM.
